Georgia Man Receives Photo of Drill Instead of Actual Tool from AliExpress

A man from Georgia has been trying for months to secure a refund after claiming he ordered a drill from AliExpress but instead received a printed photo of one.

Sylvester Franklin, from Savannah, decided it was time to invest in some new tools, so he logged onto AliExpress and ordered a drill, among other items. However, he didn’t get what he paid for.

“They sent me this – a picture. That’s what they sent me,” Franklin said.

Rather than the actual drill, Franklin received a printed image of the drill he’d ordered. He also says that several other items in his order were incorrect.

“I paid $22.47 for a pressure washer, and this is what I got,” he said. “It’s just a screw.”

Franklin has been locked in a dispute with AliExpress since placing the order back in November, but he has yet to receive a refund.

AliExpress is a subsidiary of AliBaba, often referred to as the “Amazon of China.”

In 2021, the Office of the United States Trade Representative listed AliExpress as one of its Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy. The website currently holds a D- rating from the Better Business Bureau, and in 2024, Georgia’s Consumer Protection Division (CPD) received three complaints against the company.

One of the complaints involved a shopper who “never received the item purchased.” Another stated they lost over $400 after their item was sent with a “fake tracking number” and was never delivered. In all three cases, the shoppers reported being unable to recover their money until they raised the matter with the CPD.

Franklin has tried to obtain his money back directly from AliExpress and also sought a chargeback from his bank, but neither attempt has been successful. While he says the total he spent was only around $40, he hopes others will learn from his experience.

“This is not good. It’s really bad. All of it is bad, you know what I mean? Don’t scam people. I don’t like being scammed – if you spend your money, you expect to get what you paid for,” Franklin said.
