Father Charged After Killing Deputy, Son Shot by Police
A heartbreaking and violent series of events in Cincinnati, Ohio, has left a community reeling and two families mourning. On May 1, 2025, 18-year-old Ryan Hinton was fatally shot by Cincinnati police after reportedly fleeing from a stolen vehicle and pointing a handgun at officers. Just one day later, his father, Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, allegedly struck and killed a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle.
Prosecutors allege that Rodney’s actions were deliberate. During a May 3 court appearance, the prosecution described the incident as “calculated and premeditated.” According to reports, Rodney accelerated and veered directly into the on-duty deputy near the University of Cincinnati, where the officer was working a special detail for commencement events.
The deputy, a recently retired officer serving on a contract assignment, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was remembered by law enforcement officials as a dedicated public servant and respected member of the department.
Rodney Hinton has been charged with aggravated murder. Despite having no prior felony record, his bond request was denied by the court. His defense team cited overwhelming emotional distress following the loss of his son just 24 hours earlier.
The Hinton family has retained attorney Michael Wright to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ryan Hinton’s death. The incident involving Ryan has sparked community concern, particularly given the racial dynamics—Ryan and his family are Black, while the slain officer was white.
This tragic sequence underscores the deep emotional toll and complex reactions that can follow police-involved shootings. While investigators continue to gather evidence, the case has ignited intense debate across Ohio, particularly regarding use of force, grief, and accountability.
Rodney Hinton Jr. is expected to return to court on Tuesday as the legal process unfolds. Meanwhile, both families, and the wider Cincinnati community, are left grappling with the aftermath of two lives lost within a span of just 24 hours.
