Dauphin County Judge Sonya McKnight Found Guilty of Attempted Murder
On April 9, 2025, Dauphin County Magisterial District Judge Sonya McKnight was found guilty of attempted murder and aggravated assault. The verdict followed a high-profile trial centered on a violent incident that took place on February 10, 2024, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
According to the prosecution, McKnight shot a man in the head while he was asleep at his home. The victim sustained severe injuries, with the bullet entering the right side of his face, traveling behind and slightly below his eyes, and exiting the left side. Miraculously, he survived the attack but suffered permanent damage, including the loss of vision in one eye.
Due to McKnight’s position as a sitting judge in Dauphin County, the local District Attorney’s Office recused itself from the case, citing a conflict of interest. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office also stepped aside for similar reasons. As a result, the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office took over the prosecution.
District Attorney Seán McCormack and First Assistant DA Courtney Hair LaRue led the case for the Commonwealth. They worked closely with the Susquehanna Township Police Department, which handled the investigation, and Victim Services, who supported the survivor throughout the legal process.
The trial was presided over by Judge Howard F. Knisely. After hearing extensive evidence and testimony, the jury delivered a guilty verdict, holding McKnight accountable for her actions. Sentencing will follow, where McKnight faces significant prison time for these serious offenses.
This case has drawn widespread attention due to McKnight’s role in the judicial system and the shocking nature of the crime. Legal experts note that the outcome underscores that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or authority.
As the community processes the verdict, the focus remains on justice for the victim and the integrity of the judicial process.
