Prison Officer Jailed for Sending 4,369 Intimate Texts to Inmate

A female prison officer has been sentenced to 27 months in jail after engaging in an inappropriate relationship with an inmate at HMP The Mount in Hertfordshire. Dawn MacCormack, 42, was convicted of misconduct in public office after exchanging 4,369 intimate messages and phone calls with prisoner Josh Moore.

Their relationship, which spanned several months, was exposed when surveillance footage captured MacCormack giving Moore a topless massage in a prison area. Despite warnings from fellow officers about her conduct, she continued the relationship, breaching professional and security protocols.

Prison staff grew suspicious of MacCormack’s behavior and launched an internal investigation. Analysis of phone records uncovered the sheer volume of messages exchanged between her and Moore, revealing the extent of their inappropriate contact. Authorities expressed concerns that such relationships pose serious security risks, including the potential for blackmail and compromised prison safety.

During sentencing, the judge condemned MacCormack’s actions, stating that she had abused her position of trust and jeopardized the integrity of the prison system.

The court highlighted that relationships between prison staff and inmates can lead to dangerous situations, including the smuggling of contraband, manipulation, and coercion.

MacCormack, who had served as a prison officer for several years, showed little remorse for her actions. Her failure to acknowledge the severity of her misconduct contributed to the length of her sentence.

The case has been described as a warning to other prison staff about the consequences of inappropriate relationships with inmates. Authorities praised the vigilance of the officers who reported the misconduct, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in correctional facilities.

Prison officials have since reinforced policies regarding staff-inmate interactions, ensuring stricter monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ethical responsibilities required of those in law enforcement and corrections.
