Milkshake Allergic Reaction at Café Claims Life of 12yr Old
A 12-year-old girl died after drinking a milkshake contaminated with traces of tree nuts at a café in south-east London.
Mia St Hilaire, who had a severe tree nut allergy, suffered a fatal reaction in August 2023 after her drink, prepared at the Pop Inn Café on Southwark Park Road, contained traces of hazelnuts and almonds. The contamination occurred because the blender used to make her milkshake had not been cleaned after preparing a previous nut-containing drink.
The café owner, Baris Yucel, admitted to six food safety violations and was fined £18,000. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
Southwark Council’s food safety team presented CCTV evidence showing that the blender was not cleaned before Mia’s milkshake was made, leaving behind residue from an earlier order. The council stated that Mia’s allergic reaction and death could have been avoided with basic hygiene practices.
Her parents, Adrian and Chanel St Hilaire, expressed their sorrow, saying, “We think of Mia every day. Knowing her death could have been prevented so easily makes our loss even harder to bear.”
An inquest into Mia’s death is scheduled for a future date.
