Heartwarming Reunion: Son Discovers Bakery Owner is His Biological Mother
In an unexpected twist, 50-year-old Vamarr Hunter from Chicago discovered that his biological mother is Lenore Lindsey, a woman whose bakery, “Give Me Some Sugah,” he frequented weekly without realising their connection.
“I was on the phone with a friend when a call came through from the bakery,” “I was like, ‘Why is Give Me Some Sugah calling me?’”
Hunter, a regular at the bakery who visited at least once a week, was shocked to learn that the voice on the other end of the call belonged to Lenore Lindsey, the bakery owner—and his biological mother.
“When I realized who he was, we both started screaming on the phone. We were overwhelmed,” Lindsey, now 67, reminisced. At just 17, Lindsey gave birth to Hunter in 1974 and made the heart-wrenching choice to place him for adoption. “It was a challenging time for my family,” she explained. Overcome with emotion, Lindsey decided not to hold or see her son after his birth.
“They took him away, and I remember seeing a head full of hair and my mom telling me how beautiful he was,” Lindsey recalled tearfully.
Hunter only discovered his adoption at the age of 35. Despite a tough upbringing, he didn’t delve into his adoption story until March 2022, after being inspired by a genealogy TV show. Motivated, he enlisted the help of genetic genealogist Gabriella Vargas to locate his birth mother.
Using Ancestry DNA matches, Vargas successfully traced Hunter’s family tree and identified Lindsey as his mother.
“When I got the call from Vargas, I thought, ‘I’m not ready for this,’” Lindsey confessed, reflecting on the moment she received the news. Having recently undergone breast cancer surgery and gearing up for chemotherapy, Lindsey was hesitant, yet she reached out to Hunter that very day.
Despite her initial hesitation to reach out, Lindsey and Hunter reconnected, with him affectionately calling her “mother” or “ma.” He supported her through chemotherapy sessions and took over managing the bakery after quitting his job. This reunion also introduced Hunter to his sister Rachel and other nearby family members, making Lindsey a grandmother to his four children.
Lindsey expressed her joy over their reunion, saying, “It’s the most joyful story and time in my life… In my senior years, all of this has come together.” Hunter echoed her sentiments, acknowledging that while you can’t reclaim lost time, you can make the most of the present.
