Harvey Weinstein Diagnosed with Rare Bone Marrow Cancer

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer, has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, according to a report in the United States. Two sources have confirmed Weinstein, aged 72, is receiving treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia, a rare type of cancer affecting white blood cells, while in prison at Rikers Island in New York.

In a statement to NBC News, Weinstein’s representative, Craig Rothfeld, stated they would provide “no further comment” out of “respect for Mr Weinstein’s privacy”. Previously, his representatives have disclosed that he suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid in his heart and lungs. Last month, he underwent emergency surgery to remove fluid around his heart and lungs, and in July, he was hospitalised after testing positive for COVID-19 and developing double pneumonia.

These health issues arise as Weinstein awaits a retrial for his 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction, which was overturned by New York’s highest court in April. The Court of Appeals ruled that he did not receive a fair trial, as the presiding judge allowed testimony against him based on allegations not part of the case. Despite this conviction being overturned, Weinstein remains imprisoned due to another conviction last year for the rape of an actress in Los Angeles in 2013, which he is currently appealing.

Weinstein still faces two other criminal charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty, including another criminal sexual act charge and a rape charge. Last month, he also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of sexual assault.

Once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, Weinstein co-founded the film and television production companies Miramax and The Weinstein Company, producing films such as the Oscar-winning “Shakespeare In Love”, “Pulp Fiction”, and “The Crying Game”
