Tragic Cable Car Crash in Italy Kills 4 People

On April 17, 2025, a tragic cable car accident claimed the lives of four people and critically injured another on Monte Faito, a popular tourist destination near Castellammare di Stabia, just south of Naples, Italy.

Among the victims were two British tourists, Margaret Elaine Winn, 58, and Graeme Derek Winn, 65, an Arab-Israeli woman named Janan Suliman, 25, and Carmine Parlato, 59, the Italian operator of the cable car. Janan’s brother, Thaeb Suliman, survived the crash but remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The incident occurred when a traction cable reportedly snapped as the cabin was ascending the mountain, causing it to plummet into a ravine. Emergency services swiftly responded, and a rescue operation successfully evacuated 16 passengers from a descending cabin using harnesses. However, their efforts were hampered by difficult weather conditions, including thick fog and high winds.

The cable car service had recently resumed operations for the season and had undergone maintenance just one week prior. Authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation to determine if negligence played a role in the catastrophe.

This devastating accident evokes memories of the 2021 cable car disaster in northern Italy, which resulted in 14 deaths and led to widespread scrutiny of the country’s cableway safety standards.

Italian officials have vowed a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies. The victims’ families and local communities are now left grieving in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
