Those afflicted with this condition often struggle to maintain focus, as their brains have grown accustomed to rapid and fleeting stimuli, hindering concentration on tasks requiring sustained attention. Studies indicate a significant decline in average attention span over the past two decades, plummeting from two-and-a-half minutes to a mere 47 seconds.

Dr. Ranj Singh, speaking on Good Morning Live, shed light on strategies to combat ‘popcorn brain’. He delineated it as a behavioral pattern rather than a physical ailment, underscoring its detrimental impact on memory, concentration, and susceptibility to distraction. Social media engagement, he explained, triggers a continuous quest for instant gratification, likely affecting dopamine levels, the brain’s reward neurotransmitter.

To address this pervasive issue, Dr. Singh proposed a three-pronged approach. Firstly, acknowledging the problem without shame, recognizing its prevalence among many. Secondly, advocating purposeful engagement with social media, discouraging mindless scrolling in favour of intentional consumption. Lastly, he endorsed digital detoxes as the most efficacious intervention, citing personal experience with a transformative 24-hour break from social media. He emphasised the profound positive effects on mental well-being, including reduced anxiety, increased free time, and heightened happiness. Extending the duration of detoxes was encouraged for maximal benefits.
