Trump Delays TikTok Ban: 90-Day Extension to Find US Buyer

TikTok announced on Sunday that it is resuming its services in the United States after President-elect Donald Trump promised to delay the app’s ban.

Trump stated on Truth Social that he would sign an executive order upon taking office on Monday, granting the Chinese-owned video app an additional 90 days to secure a buyer. He suggested that the US or an American company should acquire a 50% ownership stake.

“By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to remain operational,” Trump said. “Without US approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars – possibly even trillions.”

Late on Saturday, TikTok ceased operations for its 170 million American users after Congress mandated in April that its owner, ByteDance, sell the platform to a non-Chinese company or face a complete shutdown. The app decided to halt its operations after the US Supreme Court upheld the ban on Friday.

A pop-up message on TikTok informed US users: “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately, that means you cannot use TikTok for now.”

Although Trump initially supported the ban, he later sought to intervene on TikTok’s behalf after amassing a significant following on the app during his 2024 presidential campaign. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, expressed gratitude towards Trump for his efforts to ensure the platform’s availability.
