Tragic Death of Elianne Andam: Teenager Faces Trial for Croydon Stabbing

The tragic killing of 15-year-old Elianne Andam has left her community in shock and mourning. The young schoolgirl, described as kind and ambitious with dreams of becoming a lawyer, was fatally stabbed on September 27, 2023, near the Whitgift Centre in Croydon. The perpetrator, 17-year-old Hassan Sentamu, allegedly carried out the attack in a fit of rage during a dispute involving his ex-girlfriend’s teddy bear.

Court proceedings revealed that the encounter was prearranged to exchange personal belongings following the end of Sentamu’s brief relationship with Elianne’s friend. While the ex-girlfriend fulfilled her part by bringing his items, Sentamu failed to return the teddy bear. When Elianne took back her friend’s belongings in solidarity, the situation escalated violently. Sentamu chased her down, cornered her, and stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife he had brought with him. The injury, which severed a major artery, proved fatal despite the rapid arrival of emergency services.

Prosecutors highlighted Sentamu’s actions as deliberate and fueled by anger, arguing that his decision to bring a knife indicated premeditation. Sentamu pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder, citing diminished responsibility due to his autism diagnosis. However, prosecutors countered that neither autism nor his difficult upbringing justified or excused his actions.

The trial, held at the Old Bailey, continues to explore the motives and circumstances of the crime.

Sentamu faces scrutiny over his choice to carry a weapon, as well as his violent response to what prosecutors called a perceived “disrespect.”

Elianne’s family, who were present in court, expressed their grief and heartbreak over losing a promising young woman who had a bright future ahead. Her death has reignited debates about knife crime, youth violence, and the societal and systemic factors contributing to such incidents.
