Silvertown Tunnel Opens April 7th 2025: Charges & Info
Silvertown Tunnel Set to Open in April 7th 2025: What Drivers Need to Know
A major new transport link is on the horizon for Londoners, as the Silvertown Tunnel under the River Thames is set to open on 7 April 2025. The tunnel will connect Silvertown in East London with the Greenwich Peninsula, providing a crucial new route that aims to ease congestion in the surrounding areas, particularly around the often-congested Blackwall Tunnel.
The new tunnel is designed to make peak-time journeys quicker and improve public transport connectivity between the two sides of the Thames. This is expected to significantly benefit commuters and local residents, offering smoother travel and more reliable transport options.
However, drivers planning to use either the Silvertown or Blackwall Tunnel should be aware of the new toll system being introduced. Starting from the opening date, a charge will apply to all vehicles using the tunnels, in both directions, during charging hours. This toll system is intended to manage traffic flow, fund the construction costs, and support the ongoing maintenance and operation of both tunnels.
To better regulate traffic, the pricing structure includes both peak and off-peak charges. Peak charges will apply during the busiest times of day—northbound from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and southbound from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on weekdays. Off-peak rates will be available at all other times, including the entire weekend, but only for drivers who register with Auto Pay.
For those travelling overnight, there’s good news: no charges will apply between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, making night-time crossings free of charge.
Before travelling, drivers are encouraged to use the online vehicle checker to confirm any charges that may apply to their journey.
