Midtown Shooting: 4 Dead, Suspect Missed NFL Office
New York City police are investigating a tragic mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan that left four people dead and a fifth wounded before the suspect, identified as Shane Devon Tamura , died by suicide inside the office building.
The violence erupted Friday afternoon on the 33rd floor of a high-rise near 45th Street and Sixth Avenue, inside the offices of Rudin Management.
Police say Tamura entered the building armed and opened fire, killing four people and critically injuring another victim. Investigators discovered a handwritten note in Tamura’s belongings claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) — a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head injuries, especially in athletes like NFL players.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed more about the suspect’s actions on Tuesday. “From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator bank up to the NFL headquarters,” Adams told CBS. “Instead, it took him to Rudin Management, and that is where he carried out additional shootings and took the lives of additional employees.”
The note also mentioned the NFL, leading police to believe Tamura may have intended to target NFL employees directly. So far, officials have not confirmed whether Tamura had any connection to the league or its offices, which are located in the same Midtown building complex.
Tamura died by suicide at the scene after the shooting rampage, police said. The surviving victim remains hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday.
The shocking shooting has reignited concerns about workplace security and gun violence in New York City’s busy commercial districts. The NYPD is reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses to learn more about Tamura’s motive, mental health history, and how he gained access to the building.
Mayor Adams condemned the killings and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. “This tragedy reminds us how fragile life is and how important it is to address gun violence and mental health in our city,” he said.
Police urge anyone with information to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers tip line as the investigation continues.
