Man Jailed for Life for the Murder of Derek Thomas in Croydon
A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of Derek Thomas in Croydon, south London. Kamar Williams, 34 , was found guilty of murder following a trial at Croydon Crown Court and will serve a minimum of 21 years behind bars.
The incident happened on 26 September 2022 when Williams attacked Thomas, 25, near an address on Eastney Road. Police were called to reports of a stabbing at around 3am. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics, Thomas died at the scene from a single stab wound to the chest.
The court heard that Williams and Thomas knew each other and that an argument between them escalated into violence. Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched a detailed investigation which included reviewing hours of CCTV footage, speaking to witnesses, and examining forensic evidence that linked Burke directly to the murder.
Following the stabbing, Williams fled the area and attempted to evade capture. He was arrested days later after police tracked him down at an address outside Croydon. William was later charged with murder and remanded in custody while awaiting trial.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation, praised Thomas’s family for their strength during the court process. He said: “This was a senseless act of violence that has left Derek’s family devastated. I hope today’s verdict and sentence can bring them some measure of comfort.”
In a statement, Derek Thomas’s family described him as a “kind and caring son, brother and friend” who was deeply loved and whose death has left an irreplaceable gap in their lives. They thanked the police and witnesses who came forward, helping to secure justice for Derek.
Knife crime continues to be a serious issue in London, and the Met Police have urged communities to work together to tackle violent crime and encourage people to come forward with information.
Williams’ sentencing marks the end of a long legal process that brought some closure to Thomas’s loved ones. The Met Police say they remain committed to taking violent offenders off the streets and making London safer for everyone.
