Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles is facing a cancer diagnosis, which was detected during recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.
King Charles Diagnosed With Cancer
The specific type of cancer remains undisclosed, but the King has commenced “regular treatments” since Monday, according to a statement from the palace. Despite the challenging situation, the King maintains a positive outlook on his treatment and eagerly anticipates a swift return to his full public duties.
Personally informing his sons about the diagnosis, the King has been in regular contact with Prince William. Â Prince Harry, currently residing in the United States, plans to travel to the UK in the coming days to be by his father’s side. As a result of the diagnosis, the King will temporarily suspend his public engagements.
Details regarding the stage of cancer or a prognosis have not been disclosed. The 75-year-old King, who returned to London on Monday morning, is undergoing outpatient treatment while continuing his constitutional role as head of state.
In the event that the head of state is unable to fulfill official duties
a constitutional mechanism allows for the appointment of “counsellors of state” to stand in. Currently, this includes Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward. Notably, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew will no longer be called upon as non-working royals.
Despite the pause in public events, the King’s commitment to his constitutional responsibilities remains intact. Prince William, who temporarily withdrew from public engagements to support his wife’s recovery from “abdominal surgery,” is set to resume his public duties later this week.
The full statement released by Buckingham Palace regarding the King’s cancer diagnosis emphasises his public disclosure of his prostate treatment, aiming to encourage more men to undergo prostate checks. The King, seen waving to crowds at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday, had undergone a prostate procedure at a private London hospital over a week ago. Delighted to have raised awareness about prostate conditions, the King’s efforts resulted in increased inquiries on the NHS website.
