John Fashanu Arrested in Nigeria, Sues Police Over Dispute

Ex-England and Wimbledon footballer John Fashanu has been arrested in Nigeria on suspicion of multiple offenses, including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining by false pretence. The arrest stems from an ongoing land dispute concerning a 22-acre plot of land, which Fashanu was reportedly planning to sell to investors for over £500,000.

The 61-year-old former striker was detained alongside his wife, Vivian, and his lawyer, Chinyere Chigbu, on December 16, 2024. Reports suggest they were held in custody for several hours and were denied certain liberties until December 19. The Nigerian police allege that Fashanu was involved in questionable dealings regarding the ownership and sale of the land. However, Fashanu strongly denies the accusations, arguing that the matter is a civil dispute rather than a criminal case.

Following his release, Fashanu has taken legal action against the Nigerian Police Force, seeking ₦200 million (approximately £100,000) in damages for what he claims was an unlawful arrest and violation of his rights. In his lawsuit, he states that he was subjected to inhumane treatment and that the experience has negatively impacted his career prospects, including a potential coaching role with the Nigerian national football team.

Fashanu’s legal representatives argue that the Nigerian police overstepped their authority by arresting him in a civil matter, and they are pushing for legal accountability. The case is currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja, with the next hearing scheduled for April 10, 2025. Fashanu and his co-accused have been granted bail as the proceedings continue.

The former footballer, known for his time with Wimbledon FC and his role as a TV presenter on Gladiators, has been a prominent figure in sports and media. His arrest has garnered significant attention, raising questions about legal practices in Nigeria and the handling of property disputes.

As the legal battle unfolds, Fashanu maintains his innocence and insists that justice will prevail. More details are expected to emerge in the upcoming court hearings.
