Jake Paul Beats Mike Tyson On Points
In a much-anticipated boxing match, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul claimed a points victory over boxing legend Mike Tyson in Texas. The fight, watched by 70,000 fans and streamed on Netflix, saw Paul outpoint the 58-year-old Tyson, who has not fought professionally in 19 years.
Tyson, once a formidable heavyweight champion, struggled to keep up with the younger and more athletic Paul, 27. The eight-round contest, featuring two-minute rounds, highlighted Tyson’s lack of speed and stamina, leading to a unanimous decision in favor of Paul with scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.
Despite the fight’s lackluster nature, Tyson received a warm welcome from the crowd, although boos echoed as the bout concluded. Post-fight, Tyson surprisingly challenged Paul’s brother, Logan, hinting at a potential return to the ring.
The legitimacy of the fight was questioned, with both fighters using heavier gloves as required by the Texas commission. Tyson managed to land only 18 punches, while Paul connected 78 times. This marked Paul’s 11th professional win, following a loss to Tommy Fury, and he expressed interest in facing Mexican boxing star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez next.
The event, though criticized for its spectacle over substance, drew significant attention and revenue, with Paul reportedly earning £30 million and Tyson half that amount. The fight was a star-studded affair, with celebrities like NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal and boxing greats Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield in attendance.
While the match may not have lived up to expectations, it showcased the enduring allure of boxing legends and the commercial power of modern social media influencers.
