Florida Inmates Welcome Miracle Baby Despite Separation
In a surprising turn of events, two inmates from Miami-Dade County, Florida, have found themselves at the center of a unique story. Joan Depaz, 24, and Daisy Link, 29, both incarcerated on separate murder charges, have managed to conceive a child together despite never having met in person.
Link, who has been in prison since 2022 on a second-degree murder charge, described their child as a “miracle baby.” Depaz, held on a first-degree murder charge, likened the conception to a “Virgin Mary” moment.
Link described their child as a “miracle baby,” while Depaz likened the conception to “the Virgin Mary.”
Their communication began through the prison’s ventilation system, where they would spend hours talking as if they were in the same room. This connection led to a plan to conceive a child, which they executed by passing items through the vents.
“Being in isolation for so long, you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person, you know, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them,” Link explained. Depaz expressed his desire for a child, saying, “I always really wanted to have a baby. And I’m not gonna get to do that for a really long time. So if I had to choose somebody, you know, it would be you.”
They devised a plan to conceive a child, thinking, “This is gonna go down in history,” as Depaz recalled. When asked how she became pregnant while awaiting trial, Link revealed it happened “through the vent.”
“You would knock on it and you can hear the people from the different floors. You would stand on the toilet actually to be able to talk to them,” Link shared via phone call. The pair discovered that Link could drop something from her vent, which would land in Depaz’s vent. He would send his semen wrapped in Saran wrap “every day like five times a day” for a month. “He would kind of roll it up almost like a cigarette and attach it to the line we had in the vent, and I would pull it through,” Link explained. She then used “yeast infection applicators” to administer it.
After a few attempts, Link became pregnant. Dr. Fernando Akerman, medical director of the Fertility Center of Miami, noted that while the chances of conceiving this way are slim, it is possible. The baby was born on June 19 and is now living with Depaz’s mother.
“I can’t believe it worked. I think everything happened for a reason,” Link said. “She could be anything. I think that she’s gonna be something great.” She added, “It’s a real twist. Everybody says it to me: ‘This is like some Lifetime Movie Network.’”
Currently, the couple is held in separate facilities. Depaz, facing a first-degree murder charge, is at Metrowest Detention Center, while Link remains at Turner Guilford Knight. They continue to communicate through phone calls and have video chats with their child.
