Double-Decker Bus Crashes Into Railway Bridge in Manchester

A double-decker bus has crashed into a railway bridge in Manchester, leaving several people injured and causing significant disruption in the area. Emergency services were called to the scene at Corporation Road in Miles Platting at around 12:20pm on Monday, 22 July 2025, after the bus collided with the low railway bridge.

Images from the scene show the roof of the upper deck completely ripped off due to the impact with the bridge, leaving mangled metal and shattered glass strewn across the road. The bus involved is believed to be a service operated by Stagecoach Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that several people, including passengers on the upper deck, suffered injuries in the crash. North West Ambulance Service said that paramedics treated multiple patients at the scene before taking some to nearby hospitals for further treatment. None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening at this time, but the full extent of injuries has not yet been released.

A major emergency response was launched, with fire crews, police, and ambulances working to secure the area and check for any further casualties. Network Rail engineers also attended to inspect the bridge for structural damage and to ensure the safety of passing trains.

Stagecoach Manchester said it is fully cooperating with the police investigation and has launched its own internal review into how the collision occurred. In a statement, the company said: “Safety is our absolute priority. We are supporting those affected and working closely with the authorities to understand how this happened.”

Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang as the bus hit the bridge, followed by the sound of shattering glass. Local residents described the scene as “chaotic” as emergency vehicles arrived and passengers were helped to safety.

Corporation Road was closed for several hours while debris was cleared and structural inspections were carried out. Commuters were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

The crash has once again raised questions about buses striking low bridges in the UK, with calls for clearer signage, better driver awareness, and improved GPS systems to help prevent similar accidents in the future.

Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
