A car accident at the bustling Christmas market in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, left seven people injured, including a young child and a baby. The incident occurred around lunchtime when an elderly man in his 80s lost control of his vehicle while attempting to exit a parking space, inadvertently driving into a crowd of market-goers. Despite the alarming nature of the accident, police have reassured the public that none of the injuries are life-threatening or life-changing.
Eyewitness Esra Ward, who was stationed near her pizza stall, recounted the shocking moment when the parked car suddenly accelerated, striking several individuals. Among those hit was a mother with a baby in a stroller. Ward described the swift arrival of emergency services, including ambulances, police, and fire crews, who were on the scene within minutes to provide assistance.
In light of the accident, the Victoria Day Christmas markets continued as planned, following advice from Avon and Somerset Police.
The event organizers took to Facebook to inform attendees that the market would remain open, urging them to refrain from taking photos or speculating on social media while emergency services worked to aid those affected.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the incident involved a low-speed collision with pedestrians. The driver, along with seven pedestrians—five adults and two children—were assessed by ambulance crews at the scene. The South Western Ambulance Service dispatched five ambulances, an air ambulance, and additional resources to ensure prompt medical attention.
The Chipping Sodbury Christmas Sunday organizers reiterated on Facebook that the event would proceed, emphasizing the importance of respecting the situation and allowing emergency services to perform their duties. They encouraged visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere while remaining mindful of the ongoing response efforts.
