British Woman Arrested for Smuggling £170K Cannabis In Ghana

British Woman Remanded in Ghana After £170K Cannabis Seizure

A 22-year-old British woman has been remanded into custody in Ghana after being arrested at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) with nearly 18 kilograms of suspected cannabis. Browne-Frater Chyna Jada was detained on 18 May 2025 while attempting to board a British Airways flight to London.

The arrest followed intelligence received by Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) from international partners regarding a suspected drug smuggling syndicate trafficking cannabis grown in Thailand into the UK via Ghana. Acting on this tip-off, Ghanaian authorities placed Browne-Frater on an immigration watchlist prior to her arrest.

During a search at the airport, NACOC officers discovered a suitcase checked in under her name containing 32 vacuum-sealed slabs of dried plant material. Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. The total weight of the packages was 17.92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of over £230,000.

In her initial statement to police, Browne-Frater claimed she was unaware of the suitcase’s contents, saying it had been packed by her boyfriend, identified only as “Joey”. She alleged she believed the luggage contained locally sourced alcoholic drinks and spices.

Appearing before an Accra Circuit Court, she was charged with attempting to export narcotic drugs, conspiracy to commit a crime, and unlawful possession of narcotics. The presiding judge, Mrs Susan Eduful, denied her bail, citing the ongoing investigation and the potential flight risk, especially with her alleged accomplice still at large.

Authorities have sealed the confiscated packages and are sending them to the Ghana Standards Authority for further forensic analysis. Investigations into the broader smuggling operation are ongoing, with NACOC urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Browne-Frater is expected to reappear in court in the coming weeks as the prosecution gathers additional evidence.
