Boeing Faces New Safety Challenges As Engine Cover Falls Off During Take Off

Boeing faces new safety challenges as engine cover falls off during take off. US aviation regulators have launched an inquiry into a concerning incident involving a Boeing aircraft, where an engine cowling detached during takeoff, striking the wing flap.
This event adds to ongoing safety concerns for the aircraft manufacturer.

Southwest Airlines flight 3695 returned safely to Denver International Airport shortly after takeoff, following the detachment of the engine cowling. The aircraft, carrying 135 passengers and six crew members bound for Houston, Texas, landed without injuries.

Boeing, facing impending leadership changes, grapples with this latest challenge. CEO Dave Calhoun’s announced departure by year-end, coupled with the sudden exit of Stan Deal, head of commercial planes, marks a significant transition in leadership. Steve Mollenkopf, the new board chair, vows to address the company’s challenges thoroughly.

The incident underscores recent safety scrutiny on Boeing. Following the detachment of a door plug panel from an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 jet in January, the FAA grounded the Max 9 temporarily and imposed production restrictions on Boeing. A criminal investigation by the FAA further complicates matters.

Despite ongoing safety controversies, Boeing revealed a substantial increase in Calhoun’s compensation. However, uncertainties remain regarding the realization of stock options upon his scheduled departure.

The aircraft involved in the incident entered service in 2015, with maintenance teams currently assessing its condition. Visual evidence depicts the torn engine cover, bearing the Southwest logo, indicative of the severity of the incident.

The FAA’s scrutiny extends to recent engine-related incidents involving Southwest Boeing aircraft, reflecting broader safety concerns under investigation.
